Using rendering and surfacing technologies through the design process is the key to turning a good product into a really good product!
Rendering CAD models was one of the first services I did to open the business.
I used SolidWorks PhotoView from 2010. Later we used SolidWorks Visualise (previously known as Bunkspeed).
Now we are using Blender. But we still use all three tools, depending on the workflow.
CAD is what engineers use to make things manufacturable. But size, parallax, field of view, and focus from our eyes is not what CAD is supposed to emulate.
CAD systems are for allowing an engineer to make manufacturable designs. Rendering is what we need for validating how something will look in real life.
But it’s not just rendering!!!
Blender (or any other surfacing tool) allows the easy creation of more organic and marketable designs with the freedom of surfacing. It’s like digitally moulding clay.
It depends on the product, but using all of CAD, surfacing, and rendering throughout the process ensures the quickest and best outcomes.
The tools we have available to us now, I could only dream of 15 years or so ago.
But of course, it’s not just the tools. It’s the people that drive them and their unique skills to mould products with Form, Fit, and Function in mind.
